The ballet “Aleko” is based on the poem “The Gypsy” (1827) by the Russian literary giant Alexander Pushkin.
The music features an orchestral arrangement of Tchaikovsky’s “Piano Trio in A Minor,” and the stage backdrops were created by Marc Chagall. The four backdrops left the Ballet Theatre in 1977 and are currently on display as works of art in the “Aleko Hall” at the Aomori Museum of Art.

In November 2024, the Aomori Museum of Art production of the ballet “Aleko,” directed by Naoya Homan, was staged, bringing the set design back to life on stage after more than 50 years.
The performances of “MoN Takanawa: The Museum of Narratives” from Friday, May 29 to Sunday, June 7 promise to be a rare opportunity to witness the fantastical collaboration between Chagall’s paintings and ballet.
Following the performances on Saturday, May 30, Sunday, May 31, and Saturday, June 6 , there will be post-performance talks featuring choreographer and director Naoya Hōman, as well as Koiya Ōkawa and Alexandre Trousseau, who play Aleko , and Koichi Kubo, Artistic Director of the NBA Ballet Company .
