Amid growing interest in Heisei culture, including the Heisei retro and Y2K booms, the “Heisei Love Exhibition” will be held at Roppongi Museum from Tuesday, April 7 to Sunday, June 28. This exhibition explores Heisei culture through the theme of “love.”
The roughly 30-year Heisei era, starting in 1989, saw rapid development in communication tools while also giving rise to many unique experiences and cultures specific to that time in romance.
Mustering the courage to press the send button on a flip phone, anxiously checking for new messages over and over while waiting for a reply from someone you liked, sharing favorite songs by lending CDs or MDs—perhaps because communication methods were limited, each interaction and message felt all the more special.
The “Heisei Love Exhibition” lets you relive the excitement of that era by viewing nostalgic items and experiencing them firsthand in a space designed to evoke memories of those days.
Rental CD shops and other nostalgic Heisei spaces are fully recreated.

This exhibition fully recreates nostalgic Heisei-era spaces like classrooms where youth was spent and rental CD shops. It also gathers a large collection of items like flip phones, MD players, photo albums, pagers, and exchange diaries. Interactive features let visitors peek at “flip phone screens” and the contents of “secret notes passed during class. “
Additionally, a shop featuring nostalgic stationery and miscellaneous goods themed around “those after-school days” will open, along with a cafe designed to fuel the “mindset to share stories” ignited by the “Heisei Love Exhibition” experience.
For those who spent their youth in the Heisei era, this exhibition offers a chance to reconnect with the excitement of that time, sparking lively conversations like “Remember when…?” and “You know what I mean?” with shared memories and relatable moments. For those unfamiliar with the Heisei era, it promises an emotional and fresh experience, allowing them to feel the unique thrill of “Heisei romance.”
