MUTEK.JP 2025, a festival of electronic music and digital creativity, will be held at Spotify O-EAST and WWW in Shibuya from Thursday, November 20 to Sunday, November 23.
More than 20 up-and-coming artists from Japan and abroad will gather.
The theme of this year’s event, the 10th anniversary of the festival, is “Exploring the unknown possibilities of sound and visual expression that expand consciousness, created by the resonance between technological evolution and creativity. More than 20 up-and-coming artists from Japan and abroad will appear in sound, digital art, audiovisual live performances, and new media art.
An outline of the four days of performances is as follows.
MUTEK.JP 2025 A/Visions / Opening Night (November 20)
Martin Messier, a media artist based in Montreal, Canada, presents his new work “1 drop 1000 years”. Combining sound, light, and movement, the immersive audiovisual performance focuses on the Earth’s ocean current system and the effects of climate change.
Also featured will be a trio featuring Jim O’Rourke, Eiko Ishibashi, and Joe Talia. The trio will perform experimental improvisations that intermingle electro-acoustic soundscapes and drums. Doors open at 19:00, show starts at 20:00, and the show ends at 23:00.
MUTEK.JP 2025 Nocturne 1 (November 21)
The Berlin-based Alva Noto, who pursues the world’s most advanced sonic expression, and goat, an experimental rhythm ensemble led by Koshiro Hino, will perform, while the late-night program will feature the Japanese alternative rock band GEZAN, the Tokyo- and Berlin-based Korean artist machìna, the South American Andean Nicola Cruz, influenced by the rhythms of the Andes in South America, will perform until morning. Doors open at 19:00, show starts at 20:00, and ends at 5:00.
MUTEK.JP 2025 Nocturne 2 (November 22)
Paris-based art unit NONOTAK will perform an aural and visual jolt of a live set, synchronizing music and visuals in a space that uses light to depict straight lines, curves, and geometric patterns, while Daito Manabe will reprise his audiovisual performance that overwhelmed audiences at this year’s Sónar Festival in Barcelona. London-based electronic music producer and audio-visual artist Halina Rice will perform a special audiovisual set. Vienna-based MONOCOLOR will perform “Sentient Ocean,” a unique world that exists between nature and synthesis by generating sound and images in real time.
Don’t miss “Verses GT,” a collaboration unit between Montreal-based Jacques Greene and American Nosaj Thing, both of whom have garnered attention for their debut album on LuckyMe. Martyn Bootyspoon, also from Montreal, will perform his own audiovisual set. Doors open at 7:00pm, 8:00pm, show ends at 5:00pm.
MUTEK.JP 2025 Nocturne 3 (November 23)

Nocturne 3″ will be held on the last day at “Spotify O-EAST”. The event will bring together a variety of performances that transcend genres and styles.
Performers include a special duo ambient live performance by Sakanaction bassist Aimi Kusakari and kyoka, Grammy nominee Marie Davidson, and Open Reel Ensemble led by Ei Wada, who plays an open-reel tape recorder as an instrument.
The duo WaqWaq Kingdom, consisting of Shigeru Ishihara aka Scotch Rolex and Kiki Hitomi, formerly of King Midas Sound, will express their unique sense of humor with a unique sound that fuses traditional Japanese music with dancehall, techno, and polyrhythms.
Montreal producer Guillaume Coutu-Dumont and visual artist Line Katcho will also present “Les Empires,” an audiovisual performance. The finale will feature improvisation and dance music by Satoshi Tomiie, Kuniyuki Takahashi, and Manami Sakamoto.
