This year, due to delays in planting caused by a typhoon, the flowers are expected to be on display longer than usual, through late September.
At “Nagai Umi-no-Te Park Soleil no Oka” in Nagai, Yokosuka City, Kanagawa Prefecture, approximately 100,000 sunflowers will begin blooming in succession starting in early August 2026.
The peak blooming period is expected to be in early August, and visitors are expected to be able to enjoy the flowers until late September. This year, planting was delayed compared to usual due to the impact of a typhoon that made landfall in June. As a result, the blooming period has been extended until early autumn, when the intense summer heat subsides, resulting in a longer viewing season than usual.
Varieties and Highlights
The two main varieties coloring this year’s flower fields are “Pioneer,” characterized by its large blooms and vivid yellow color, and “Dancing Sun,” whose petals spread out as if dancing. They are planted in various locations throughout the park, including the Flower Garden West, and the park has adopted a system where blooms are staggered across multiple areas in a relay-style sequence to maintain peak viewing conditions over an extended period.
In the evening, as the sun sets over Sagami Bay, the entire sunflower field is bathed in golden light. It is a popular spot for photography, with views of the Ferris wheel stretching into the distance.
Limited-Time Culinary Offerings and Summer Events
To coincide with the blooming season, nine shops within the park will offer limited-time sunflower-themed menus from Friday, July 17, 2026, through Sunday, August 30, 2026. The lineup is as follows.

During the same period, an Instagram photo contest titled “Summer Standout Photo Contest” will also be held. To enter, simply tag the official account ( @soleil_yokosuka ) and include the hashtag “#SoleilStandout2026” in your post. Winners of each prize category will receive a one-day unlimited ride pass. Results are scheduled to be announced on Friday, September 11, 2026.
The challenge to set a new Japanese record continues
The “Giant Sunflower Cultivation Project,” which set a record of 3 meters last year, will also be held from July 17 through August 30. The Japanese record for sunflower height is 7.5 meters, and visitors will be watching closely to see how high this year’s sunflowers will grow. The peak blooming period is expected to be around mid-August.
