Dates should be memorable occasions, especially if you’ve been dating a while, so our guide includes not only the typical places, but also spots that are unique to Tokyo, which offer some of the best things to do for couples! Why not make reservations in advance and gift it as a surprise experience?
1. Settle in for a film at 109 Cinemas Premium Shinjuku
A film date is a classic for a reason! Opened in April 2023, 109 Cinemas Premium Shinjuku is a cinema in Tokyu Kabukicho Tower, which has all premium seats and theatres equipped with high-spec projection and audio equipment. In addition, the late Ryuichi Sakamoto supervised the sound in all theatres. On your birthday, why not enjoy a special experience in CLASS S, which occupies the centre row of all theatres?

2. Catch live music at Cotton Club
One of our favourite live music venues in Tokyo, the Cotton Club takes its name from the legendary club in Harlem, N.Y that helped launch the careers of Duke Ellington, Cab Calloway, and Lena Horne. Here, a la carte as well as dinner courses are served along with live performances by talented international artists.

3. Sink into the Galaxy Seats at Konica Minolta Planetaria Tokyo
Konica Minolta, one of the world’s leading planetarium equipment manufacturers, offers a planetarium dome theatre that provides an infinitely realistic and beautiful starry sky. Based on the concept of “a new experience of being surrounded by a sparkling galaxy,” the Galaxy Seat was created in collaboration with premium custom-made furniture manufacturer Minerva Co, to feel as though you’re floating in outer space. It’s an experience only available at Planetaria Tokyo, and the seats are woven with gold and silver threads by Hosoo Corporation, a long-established company in Kyoto. From 4,200 yen per seat.

4. Join an astronomical observation at Shibuya Sky
At Shibuya Sky – an observatory facility located 229 meters above Shibuya with a 360° panoramic view from its rooftop observation space – astronomical observation events are held every month. Visitors can use the astronomical telescope installed in the “Sky Stage” and enjoy observation of the heavens with commentary by the venue’s ‘star sommelier®’.

5. Glide around Tokyo Bay on a dinner cruise
This is the only cruise where you can experience a route that passes under two bridges, the Rainbow Bridge and the Tokyo Gate Bridge. Lunch cruises, afternoon cruises, sunset cruises, and dinner cruises are available at different times, so whatever the time of day, you can enjoy cruising around the city with meals included.
6. Enjoy the views from the Tokyo Tower Observation Deck
Why don’t you take the opportunity of your date to visit Tokyo Tower, which dominates the skyline but can be easily overlooked as a date idea for those who live in Tokyo. Climb to the main deck, located 150 meters above the ground, to enjoy a 360° panoramic view of the city of Tokyo. Outdoor events are regularly held in “Foot Town,” which has an exterior stairway entrance to the main deck and a view looking directly up the tower.
