“ShinKing Night” is an event that combines the Japanese word for “death” (shi) with “thinking.”
This event was conceived as a space where people of all ages and backgrounds can engage in conversation about the theme of “death” while enjoying a drink. While previous events were held in Kanazawa, where the organizer, Sanwa Bussan, is headquartered, this third installment will be the first to take place in Tokyo.

On the day of the event, participants will take part in a “coffin experience” where they actually lie inside a coffin, as well as the “Death-inking 16 Types” quiz to assess their views on life and death. Additionally, “Candle of Life,” a digital installation where the length of a candle representing “lifespan” grows through dialogue among participants, will be featured.
Additionally, Dr. Shotaro Michishita of AFRODE CLINIC—who advocates for “Well-dying,” a philosophy of finding life through death—will appear as a special guest and deliver the opening talk.
Japan is entering a “society of many deaths,” where the annual death toll continues to rise, and that number is projected to peak around 2040. At the same time, it remains a fact that there is still a psychological barrier to talking about death.
This event aims to confront that “difficulty in talking about it” and provide an opportunity to reflect on “how to live in the present” through the lens of death.
