The “Moving Yokai Exhibition,” held in Nagoya from July to September 2025, has arrived in Tokyo!
See yokai come to life before your eyes!
The “Moving Yokai Exhibition” is an immersive digital art museum where you can experience Japan’s proud yokai art —including “Hyakki Yagyō Emaki” (Night Parade of a Hundred Demons), “Hyakumonogatari” (One Hundred Ghost Stories), “Oni” (Oni), “Tengu,” “Kappa,” and “Tsukumogami” (object spirits)—depicted by Edo and Meiji period artists. It combines cutting-edge visual technology and three-dimensional modeling for an immersive experience.
It dynamically brings to life the forms of Japan’s beloved yokai, cherished across generations, using cutting-edge digital technology like 3DCG, projection mapping, and holographic screens. It also recreates a realistic yokai world through three-dimensional modeling.
Humorous yokai like oni, tengu, kappa, and tsukumogami appear in real space , allowing visitors to enjoy their expressions and textures up close.

In addition to displaying original ukiyo-e prints of yokai by Utagawa Kuniyoshi, the exhibition features explanations of yokai paintings, caricatures, and yokai art from the Edo and Meiji periods, such as “Hyakki Yagyō no Zu” (Procession of a Hundred Demons) and “Hyakumonogatari” (A Hundred Ghost Stories), with cooperation from Japan’s first museum of ancient books, the Nishio City Iwase Bunko, and the Shodoshima Yokai Art Museum.
The exhibition explores the cultural and historical background of yokai, rooted in ancient Japanese mythology and folklore, while tracing how these supernatural beings connect to modern pop culture.
The exhibition centers on non-verbal, intuitively experiential content, with explanations provided in both Japanese and English. Interactive digital art experiences where visitors can play with yokai, engaging play content for children, and seating areas for quiet viewing are designed to appeal to a wide range of ages and nationalities.
