Why not get up a little earlier on your day off and head out for a delicious breakfast? Here are some of the most popular breakfast places in Tokyo, and the dishes you should order when you visit.
1. crisscross (Omotesando)
An open-air all-day café with a terrace surrounding a camphor tree, about a 2-minute walk from Omotesando Station. Seasonal pancakes and the Buttermilk Pancakes Sausage & Fried Eggs are popular orders here. You can also order bread from breadworks Omotesando on the premises.
5-7-28 Minamiaoyama, Minato-ku, Tokyo
2. DAY & NIGHT (Hiroo)
A place where you can also enjoy sweets from morning to night. During lunch hours, hearty sandwiches such as Philly cheesesteaks and pulled pork are popular, but be sure to try the refreshingly sweet pancakes in the morning. Pets are allowed here, too.
2-39-5 Ebisu, Shibuya-ku, Tokyo
3. Katsuo Shokudo (Shibuya)
The restaurant is listed in Michelin’s Bib Gourmand guide, and many people stand in long lines every day for the rice topped with freshly shaved dried bonito flakes. Opening hours can be a little irregular, so please check the official account before visiting.
GranDuo Shibuya B1F, 7-12 Uguisudani-machi, Shibuyaku, Shibuya-ku, Tokyo
4. Tokyo Doujiang Life (Gotanda)
The most popular dish at this excellent Taiwanese restaurant, salty soybean milk soup ( 鹹豆漿), has a gentle sour taste. Try the small but hearty Taiwanese bread, handmade in the store every morning.
MKY Bldg. 1F, 1-20-3 Nishi-Gotanda, Shinagawa-ku, Tokyo
5. Hotel’s (Kita-Aoyama)
An affiliate of the Michelin-starred sio restaurant in Yoyogi Uehara. Like a hotel restaurant, you can enjoy different specialties depending on the timing of your visit: morning, lunch, and dinner. The crispy skin and fluffy flesh of silver salmon and the pork miso soup with slightly sweet white miso paste will keep you coming back for more rice.
2F, No Aoyama Mininkatsudo, 3-4-3 Kita-Aoyama, Minato-ku, Tokyo
6. Breakfast Club (Meguro)
This is a restaurant where breakfast is served all day long, created by Ruri Shioi, who has been involved in planning “Gold” and “Le Baron” and is a leader in Tokyo’s night culture. In an atmosphere reminiscent of a diner in an American movie, be sure to choose the Breakfast Club set.
2-2-4 Higashiyama, Meguro-ku, Tokyo
7. Heavenly Island Lifestyle (Daikan-yama)
Heavenly Island Lifestyle is an all-day dining restaurant with its main branch in Waikiki, Hawaii. The fluffy French toast is served with a generous drizzle of Island Honey, which has a slightly rough texture.
2F Daikanyama Plaza, 24-7 Sarugaku-cho, Shibuya-ku, Tokyo
8. Tsumugi (Tsukiji)
Enjoy the infamous 18-course breakfast with a view of Tsukiji Honganji Temple through the restaurant’s large windows. The number 18 is derived from the fact that of the 48 wishes established by Hozo Bosatsu, Honganji Temple places great importance on the 18th wish, “to let all beings of life be born equally into a world where they can truly feel secure”. Advance reservations are recommended as half of the 42 seats are reserved.
3-15-1 Tsukiji, Chuo-ku, Tokyo
9. Misojyu (Asakusa)
Asakusa’s miso soup specialty restaurant. Miso soup made from carefully selected bonito flakes and kelp is available in a variety of flavours, from the standard miso soup to innovative miso soup inspired by soup dishes from all over the world. It is served from 8am, and we’d definitely recommend it before a stroll through Asakusa.
1-7-5 Asakusa, Taito-ku, Tokyo
10. Breakfast & Brunch Jade5 (Hiroo)
A restaurant specialising in breakfast and brunch, run by an owner who worked at the American Embassy café. The Lumberjack, which means “lumberjack breakfast”, is a sweet and savoury treat, with plenty of syrup for the bacon as well. Pets are also allowed here.
5-17-6 Hiroo, Shibuya-ku, Tokyo
