Focusing on “demolition”—a pivotal moment in urban renewal—this event reexamines the memories and values accumulated at this site through art, dialogue, and participatory programs. It is an attempt to redefine the time remaining before the building disappears through new forms of expression.
At the Address Building, the venue for the event, the entire structure—including walls, floors, and hallways—will be utilized for artist exhibitions and live art creation. Additionally, there will be workshops and painting experiences open to visitors, exhibits exploring Akasaka’s history, and live performances by Musashino Art University.
The exhibition changes daily. Highlights of the program
A highlight is “Sono Aida #Akasaka [Understructure],” which began in advance on June 23 . Fourteen contemporary artists are using the building as both a studio and exhibition space, creating works in public throughout the event. With artists joining spontaneously, the ever-evolving exhibition is a must-see.
In addition, a “Paint Art Experience Space” will be set up where visitors can freely draw on the walls and floors. This allows them to leave their own personal marks on the space just before it is demolished.
Be sure to check out the signage featuring “Shuetsu-tai,” a unique hand-drawn font created using the masking tape commonly found at construction sites. Incorporated into directional signs and graphics, it transforms the sterile construction materials into approachable art.
On Friday, July 10, an opening talk will be held under the theme “Considering the Future of the City from the End of a Building.” The following day, Saturday, July 11, a special edition of “Sunege~ Live” featuring Professor Koichi Wakasugi and students from Musashino Art University will also take place.
These are two precious days to enjoy together through art, rather than simply watching the building disappear before it’s gone.
