“Kurashi no Manimani” is a series of events held on the approximately 100-tatami-mat “Tatami” space on the 4th floor of MoN Takanawa, offering a monthly reinterpretation of seasonal events and customs that are gradually being forgotten in modern life.
Tatami mats were once at the center of Japanese daily life. On tatami mats, people felt the changing seasons, savored seasonal delicacies, and conversed with family—a rich wisdom that thrived there, as people lived their daily lives in harmony with the flow of nature.
The theme for July’s “Kurashi no Manimani” is “Mononoke.” In the “Tatami” space—where you can forget the hustle and bustle of the city—you can enjoy two experiences that let you savor a Japanese summer.
Workshop to Create “Yokai Collages” and Wagashi-Making Experience

The first event is a workshop where participants create their own “yokai collages” by cutting out and pasting unique eyes, hands, and feet onto silhouettes depicting Takanawa’s history—such as Japan’s first railway, the Takanawa Embankment, and Ōkido, the boundary of Edo.
By scanning the images, everyone can connect the yokai—which realistically move around the tatami walls—to complete a “modern Hyakki Yagyo picture scroll.”

The second event is a Japanese sweets experience where participants can savor Endo Mochi Shop’s cool “zunda mochi” —a Sendai specialty with the aroma of edamame—while reflecting on the “Sendai Tanabata Festival,” held from August 6 to 8.
As you sense the presence of mysterious shadows stretching across the tatami mats, let your heart unwind with a refreshingly cool sweet treat. Why not head out for a special summer evening stroll that engages all five senses and your imagination?
