Japan’s only desert and back desert

The back desert of Oshima is the only place marked as desert on maps published by the Geospatial Information Authority of Japan. The magma that poured down from the repeated eruptions of Mt. Mihara has burned the earth and plants, creating a black world all around. There are two main routes to the back desert. The “Ura-Desert Course” is a 1-1.5 hour one-way hiking course leading from the Oshima Onsen Hotel. The “Moon and Desert Line” is a 10-minute walk from the parking lot from the parking lot.
Stratigraphically important cross section
The striped strata were created by about 100 large eruptions that have occurred repeatedly over the past 20,000 years. It is approximately 30 meters high and extends for more than 600 meters along the island’s round-the-island road from Motomachi Port to Habu Port on the southwest side of the island. It is affectionately known as “baumkuchen” by the islanders.

Toushiki Swimming Beach
Diving can be enjoyed on Oshima, but snorkeling is also a great way to see colorful fish. Toushiki Beach, the southernmost point of Izu Oshima, is a natural pool surrounded by basalt lava that blocks the waves of the open sea, making it very calm. There are also many crabs and other creatures on the rocks.
