Tokyo’s new Azabudai Hills development may be home to the tallest building in Japan, but that’s not the main draw of the area. The Mori Building Digital Art Museum opened on February 9 in the Garden Plaza, and the famous tenant here is teamLab Borderless, the upgraded experience from the same international art collective behind Tokyo’s teamLab Planets experience.
You’d have previously found teamLab Borderless in Odaiba, which opened in June 2018 and closed in August 2022. The experience received more than 2.3 million annual visitors, of which around 50% were foreign visitors to Japan, coming from more than 160 countries both near and far, including large numbers from the US, Australia, China, Thailand, Canada, and the UK.
According to a survey conducted by teamLab, around half the foreign visitors to the museum came to Tokyo with the purpose of visiting the museum, and the upgrades are likely to make it even more popular after reopening with new works.
What new works can I see at teamLab Borderless?
The evolved teamLab Borderless is described as a “museum without a map”, and features artworks without boundaries. (Hence the name ‘Borderless’).
The artworks break free from their rooms and move to other rooms, communicating with other works, being influenced by them, and mixing with each other. Visitors are invited to enjoy the experience of “wandering, exploring, and discovering in one world without boundaries” by immersing their entire bodies in the boundaryless art.
Amongst the most visually striking artworks you’ll find blending together are the moody red ‘Life is an Ephemeral Light that Blooms in the Dark’, the hypnotic ‘Reversible Rotation’, and the flower-filled ‘Animals of Flowers, Symbiotic Lives’.
Step into the social media-famous Bubble Universe for a truly jaw-dropping experience, where you’re totally surrounded by art. Meanwhile, the ever-changing Light Sculpture comes alive with colours, whilst the Future Park is home to the charming ‘Sketch Ocean’, where hand-drawn fish created by visitors come to life on the screen in front of you.
It’s easy to spend a few hours at teamLab Borderless without noticing the time slipping away, such are the visual treats you can see. Since the move to Azabudai Hills, teamLab Borderless has added many new works and works that have never been shown in Japan or elsewhere before, so why don’t you visit this cultural landmark in Tokyo?
