EASTEAST_, a Tokyo-based art fair established by cultural professionals working in different fields such as art, fashion, architecture, design, and music, will be held for the first time in two years.
Program at the main venue
In addition to 13 domestic galleries/spaces participating for the first time , three galleries from overseas will be invited to participate in this third edition of the fair.
The main venue, the Science Museum, will host a total of 26 exhibitors, as well as the “EE_V/S/P Program,” a project presenting video, sound, and performance art, curated by JACKSON kaki and non-syntax, and the “Stillill_V/S/P Program,” a performance platform exploring human existence and relationships through the body. The program will also include performances by Stilllive, a performance platform that explores human existence and relationships through the body, and EE_Kitchen & Bar, a place for participants to interact with each other.
EE_Park” to be held in the parking lot
This year, “EE_Park” will be held in the Kitanomaru Park Parking Lot 1 adjacent to the Science Museum to introduce new art practices emerging from local contexts in Tokyo, Noto, and other parts of Asia.
The art project “獸 (Chapter 3 / EDGE)” (November 7-10) by “GILLOCHINDOX☆GILLOCHINDAE,” which continues to work on the theme of the city and youth, will include the screening of video works using cinematic techniques by filmmaker Taro, and a series of performances by a variety of artists. The “EDGE” (November 7-10) will feature a series of genre-crossing expressions, including the screening of cinematic video works by filmmaker Taro and performances by various artists.
The seven-year-long “Frog” series is a feature-length project that depicts the “boundary between city and human” with a black animal as the protagonist. This exhibition, the fourth in the series, will be the largest installation in the series.
TURN OFF THE 5 PARADIGM LIGHTS,” an installation by GCmagazine, a collective of mainly young artists, consists of a performance of hand-pushing a wheelbarrow around the Suzuka Circuit in midsummer, and video and photographs documenting the process.
Using a vehicle wrapped with photographs taken during the performance and a special racing suit with color chart functionality, the exhibition asks the question of “the value of process and labor in photography. On the first day of the exhibition, a performance will be held in which the vehicle will actually be brought in while being hand-pushed.
Five years have passed since the inaugural event in 2020, when the significance of art and galleries in the Corona Disaster was reexamined and a new form of art fair was experimentally presented. What kind of artists, communities, and art projects will we encounter this year?
